What is M.E.E.T.?
It is M
ongolian-Expat Exchange Time

Foreword:  by Leon (Group Leader)

I have been in Mongolia since September 2010  for Orchlon School as an English Teacher.  In the time that I've been here,  I have noticed that there are quite a lot of expatriates;  And, I have noticed that there are quite a lot of Mongolians who want to learn/practice their English.  Yet, there is no avenue where Mongolians can convene with expatriates in the spirit of friendship and language exchange.  Therefore, I have decided to start up such an avenue.  It is called, "M.E.E.T."

Our Mission Statement:

Our mission is to form a peaceful, friendly, and cooperative alliance between local Mongolians and Expatriates living in Mongolia.  Furthermore, our mission is to develop cultural and linguistic understanding.

What is the public quiz all about?

Entrance to play was a mere 5000 MNT, and even if you are on your own, You will be warmly accepted into a team.  With players ranging from ages of 18 to 75 and from a variety of nationalities, anyone (who speaks and understands English) is welcome to attend and play.

The food at Hennessy's is a European menu at competitive prices, and is absolutely scrumptious.

The quiz commences at 20:00, so if you come at 19:00 it gives plenty of time to digest your food and have a few drinks before the event.
The quiz is cleverly organized and thought of, with different rounds.  Sometimes there are music rounds, picture rounds and general knowledge rounds. The quiz is customer friendly and questions come from a variety of countries, including Mongolia, for all who play. When I host the quiz, the winning team receives half of the jackpot.  The other half goes to charity.  Second place gets a bottle of champagne.

So, if you are looking for a truly enjoyable evening with friendly people. Quiz nights are a must for anybody living here; it really does rid you of the humdrum of life and keeps the cobwebs off the brain.

History or the Public Quiz

In the U.S., we love to play trivia games, such as Trivial Pursuit; however, public trivia is a rare event in the U.S.  In the U.K., however, Public Quiz Nights are popular events.  I was interested to learn more about the history of Pub Quiz Nights in the UK. From the article entitled “Pub Quiz” on  According to that article, pub quiz nights can be traced back to the 1970’s in the UK. “A 2009 study puts the number of regular weekly pub quizzes in the UK at 22,445.” Compare that with, “…approximately 2,000 regular weekly quizzes throughout all 50 states.”

How the Public Quiz Works

The person who runs the quiz and asks the questions is called the “Quizmaster”. The quizmaster either marks the papers himself or asks teams to switch papers and mark each others’ papers. That’s what I shall do.  The public quiz only works if all participants are honest.  There should be no looking up answers on the wi-fi or phone internet.

There are multiple rounds with various themes. The first round (or "table round")  is generally a picture round.  Or, it could involve little puzzles.  I like ditloids and dingbats.  The next round is generally a “factual round” to test your knowledge of historical facts regarding sports, politics, or entertainment.  Occasionally, there is a music round, when contestants must listen and identify the title and artist of the song/music.  Lastly, there may be a novelty round, which is related to a specific theme, such as "Famous Archers".

To further make things interesting, there may be joker rounds or bonus questions. If there are joker rounds, the teams may choose at the beginning of the round to double their points for that round. If there is a bonus question, the first team to answer the question gets a “spot prize”, or all teams with the correct answer may be awarded additional points.

Not implemented here in Mongolia yet, there may be a jackpot round. A jackpot round costs extra money, and the money stays in the jackpot week after week until some team can correctly answer ALL three questions of the jackpot round. Just to clarify, if no team gets all three jackpot round questions correctly, all the money in the jackpot remains in the jackpot until the following week. Theoretically, the amount of money in the jackpot may accrue to a significant sum over time.

Apparently, Pub Quiz Night is so popular in the UK that whole leagues have been formed, with huge organized public tournaments or matches. Wow! That’s hard core!

Here is the when & where of the Pub Quiz that takes place in Ulaanbaatar:
